The Taipei Film
Festival is an annual multi-cultural event
containing film festival and other film
culture-related activities held by the
Taipei City Government and mapped out by the
Department of Cultural Affairs.
Organized
by Taiwan Film & Culture Association, a
non-profit film cultural organization led by
the world-acclaimed director HOU Hsiao-Hsien,
TAIPEI FILM FESTIVAL is one of the most
important and high-profile international
cultural events in Taiwan, with screenings
about 140 films from over 40 different
countries. With approximately 100,000
attendants each year, its majority is made
up of a decidedly young audience. The
Festival attracts not only moviegoers but
also film professionals. It has been
recognized as the most influential showcase
of international cinema for local film
distributors in Taiwan. Last year, more than
20 films shown in the festival were sold to
local distributors and had the theatrical
releases in Taiwan.
The festival consists of the following
sections:
INTERNATIONAL
COMPETITION-New Talent Competition
The New
Talent Competition aims to encourage young
and talented filmmakers for their
directorial debuts and innovative works, and
to provide a platform for new voices
from all over the world. Films eligible for
participation in the New Talent Competition
should:
1. Be a 35mm film production.
2. Be either the first or second feature of
the director.
3. Be Completed after January 1st, 2005
4. Not have been shown publicly in Taiwan
prior to their showing at the festival
(Taiwanese films are exempted).
5. Not have participated in any similar
competition programs in Asia.
6. Be at least 60 minutes in duration.
Deadline: April 10th, 2006
Awards:
Grand Prize - NT$1,000,000 (approximately
USD30, 000)
Special Jury Prize - NT$350,000
(approximately USD10, 000)
Audience’s Choice Award
NATIONAL COMPETITION

Awards: Feature Film, Documentary,
Experimental Film, Animation. Grand Prize -
NT$1,000,000
Taipei Image Awards: Ten-minute
shorts themed on Taipei City.
Grand Prize - NT$100,000
CITY VISION
In the past four years, “City-Vision”
section has zoomed to Paris/ Prague (2002),
Melbourne/ Kyoto (2003), Madrid/Barcelona
(2004) and Moscow/ Saint Petersburg (2005)
coupled with each year’s special programs
allowed us to present the classical cinema
as well as the recent productions from those
cities. In addition, we have also invited
some film masters such as Jiri Menzel and
Vera Chytilova from Czech Republic, French
director Leos Carax and legendary Japanese
director Ichikawa Jun to meet the audience.
This year the section will eye on Toronto
and Montreal, two Canadian cities rich in
cultural diversity and with a lively
atmosphere and multitude of ethnic cultures.
GLOBAL CHINESE FILM & VIDEO
GLOBAL CHINESE
FILM & VIDEO aims to present the current
outstanding works by Chinese filmmakers from
around the world, especially those by
independent filmmakers. In the past two
years, it opened its door to films from
Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong,
Australia, the Netherlands, Canada,
Malaysia, Singapore, USA and many others.
NEW
DIRECTORS/NEW FILMS
Focus on new
directors and their latest feature films of
all genres, this year’s festival will give
its particular attention to gay and lesbian
films
