The highly-anticipated winners of Taipei Grand Award and Taipei Image Award were announced yesterday. This year’s Taipei Grand Award was selected by the 7-member jury, including Lao Chia-hua, Hu Tai-li, Alan I. Tuan, Chen Kun-hou, Ann Hui, Dai Jin-hua and Wei Ti, whereas the Taipei Image Award were chosen by Lin Jing-jie, Hou chi-jan and Hao Yu-hsiang.

The ceremony was simple and full of warmth with many Taiwanese film workers showing their care and devotion to Taiwanese films by attending this yearly ceremony in person. When shooting pictures along with all the winners, director Ho Wi-ding and photographer Jake Pollock accidentally broke their award statues, adding a little surprise to the ending of the festival.

The million-dollar Taipei Grand Award goes to Do Over, the first feature by young director Cheng Yu-chieh who also starred in the highly acclaimed Best Narrative Film The Pain of Others. With the main purpose of encouraging young artists, this year’s Taipei Image Award embraced these creative works, including experimental, drama or documentary.

About the Taipei Grand Award and Taipei Image Award

Aimed to encourage the local film production, the Taipei Film Festival has since its beginning established two national awards “Taipei Grand Award” and “Taipei Image Award.”

The Taipei Grand Award accepts all formats and lengths of the following four categories of: narrative films, documentary, experimental films and animation. The Taipei Grand Award is reputed to be the most important arena for Taiwanese filmmakers, attracting the most vigor and creative Taiwanese films to the Film Festival. Each year, there are only 35 to 40 films are selected from more than 250 submissions for screening. The directors would appear in the meet-the-artist session after screening. To look back, many winners of the past years have made their names in the mainstream Taiwanese film industry.

“Taipei Image Award” invites the mass to interpret Taipei the city in a ten-minute short. Among the one hundred odd entries 6 to10 will be selected. The competition has provided a springboard for our young artists to the world cinema.

In addition, the “Global Chinese Film and Videos” showcases the outstanding works by Chinese independent filmmakers from all over the world. It is also a meeting point of domestic filmmaking force and the global market at large: Formula 17 made its debut in the festival two years ago, Three Times Asian premiere in last year as well as the international launch of The Heirloom.
